Did I like it?: Yes! *Squeals* I’m a huge Tomb Raider fan
Themes: Kick-butt action, girl power, mystic powers, trippy island, ancient Japan, riddles, myths, long lost family, scary antagonist, and conspiracy theories
Short Summary (No spoilers): Lara Croft, a young British woman, travels to a long lost Japanese island to discover what happened to her father.
Favorite thing about it?: The story was super close to the games. And I LOVED the games!
Below is my review, spoilers may pop up here, so don't read it if you haven't watched it >.<
Okay, so did I like it? Yes. Was I comparing it to the game the ENTIRE time? Yes.
So here is where I have some personal problems because I know the story line isn't correct. I just can't understand why they wouldn't keep the game story line (except I can because the game was super bloody and she murdered WAY more people). I get that they wanted to keep the rating down, but c'mon! If your going to do the thing, do it right.
Also, where was Jonah, Roth, and Angus? How could you make a movie without them?
Okay, now that I am done comparing it to the game, here is the actual review of the movie.
So the movie itself was pretty well done. All of the stunts looked pretty believable and the actress that played Lara did well. One of the things I didn't like was the fact that this girl was like 'an extreme sportsman' and could somehow do all these things without any previous training. In the previous versions of this movie (the one with Angelina Jolie) she was kick-butt because she practiced all the time.
Not that there was a whole lot of fighting in this movie, because there wasn't. This movie was more about the adventure and the impossible stunts that have to be preformed in order to survive. I liked the fact that they never took the stunts TO far. Like, pretty much everything she did seemed plausible. Where they exaggerated? Yes. But they were cool and most of them lined up precisely with the live action events of the game.
One thing I didn't like was the ending (spoilers are totally coming). In the end of the movie they find the body of the princess Himiko and she is DEAD. Like, she is supposed to be dead, but she's not actually supposed to be dead.
In the game the princess Himiko was an evil priestess who was able to transfer her soul through generations with a ceremony. So even if her body died, the queen herself, was always still alive and kickin' just in another body. In this movie, however, they decided to forgo the mystic properties that make Tomb Raider so intriguing. In the movie version she does not transfer her soul. Instead she is just a dead corpse with a very destructive zombie-esque disease that she transfers by touch.
I wasn't impressed with this plot twist.
But, if you aren't like me and SUPER obsessed with the games then you will probably enjoy this movie. Just make sure you understand going into it that it's more adventure than action and you will have a great movie experience. :)
