In this classic novel, author George Orwell describes a fictional super state called Oceania in which all aspects of life are controlled by an authoritarian government run by the Party. Although the Party claims Oceania to be a crime-less, class-less society, the population experiences incredible inequality among castes and any unusual action or even though is grounds for arrest by the thought police. The world of 1984 is experienced through the eyes, mind and ears of Winston Smith, a member of the Outer Party tasked with rewriting history. The story focuses on Winston's anti-party thoughts, his hate towards Big Brother, his feelings towards a fellow party member, and his struggle over pre-revolution memories. With so many dystopian novels being published and adapted into movies, now is a great time to read one of the original books that set the foundation.
