What I Saw and How I Lied by Judy Blundell
By teen libApril 8, 2013
Things are finally getting back to normal for Evie after World War II ends. Her step-father, Joe, has come back to her and her mother safe and sound. But after just a few days at home, Evie realizes that all is not the same as before the war. Joe is drinking a lot more than usual and receiving anonymous phone calls that make him angry and upset. Then on the spur of the moment, Joe proposes that they all take an extended vacation from Brooklyn to Palm Beach, Florida. Palm Beach is a ghost town in early fall, so Evie and her parents stay at the one hotel remaining open for the season, Le Mirage. But even in Palm Beach, Joe cannot escape his problems. In fact, Evie meets and falls in love with Peter Coleridge, an ex-GI who knew her father in the war. Peter is actually the cause of Joe’s agitation. But Evie is oblivious to everything in the midst of her first crush, including the tension between the two men. Even after the evidence is overwhelming, it takes a terrible accident for Evie to come to her senses and realize that her adored parents are not the people she thought they were.
